The first The Woman in the Window trailer features a song from a famous English rock band. The Woman in the Window stars Amy Adams as Dr. Anna Fox, an agoraphobic developmental psychologist who witnesses a disturbing act of violence at her neighbor’s house. Joe Wright, who was at the helm for Pan and Darkest Hour, directed the film, based on a screenplay from Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy S. Letts, who also stars in the movie.

Anna is a New York City child psychologist who suffers from agoraphobia, an anxiety disorder where people fear and avoid places that make them feel trapped or embarrassed. In Anna’s case, she can’t go outside or leave her home. Anna interacts with her neighbor, Jane (Julianne Moore), and the two strike up a relationship while spending time in Anna’s house. Things take a turn for the worse when Anna witnesses Jane being stabbed across the street. When Anna calls the police, Jane’s husband, Alistar (Gary Oldman), introduces a different woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) as Jane, much to Anna’s dismay. Anna begins to spy on the family across the street, disrupting her sanity as she attempts to solve the case. The Woman in the Window, which hits theaters in May 2020, is based on the 2018 best-selling novel from A.J. Finn.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The Woman in the Window trailer presents an eerie and menacing crime thriller, which is heightened by the music in the background. The song playing during the trailer is “The Dark Side” by Muse. As opposed to the original version, which is more electronic rock and upbeat, this version of “The Dark Side” is stripped down to just the piano and vocals. It’s called the “Alternate Reality” version and it’s featured on the deluxe edition of 2018’s Simulation Theory.

The Dark Side” heightens the psychological thriller and the lyrics could be a direct reference to one of the characters committing a heinous crime against Jane. The song might also refer to Adams’ dark side as an unreliable narrator because of her disease and pill usage. Because of this unreliability, The Woman in the Window was delayed from October 2019 to May 2020 after poor test screenings left audiences confused. Wright scheduled reshoots in order to retool the third and final act. The delay is also a direct effect of Disney’s acquisition of Fox. The Woman in the Window is set to be the last film under the Fox 2000 label because Disney, who purchased Fox, will discontinue the label.

Despite the delay and reshoots, The Woman in the Window has all the ingredients of a successful movie. It has an established director, award-winning screenwriter, and all-star cast. With the aforementioned Adams, Moore, Oldman, and Leigh, the rest of the stellar cast includes Anthony Mackie, Brian Tyree Henry, and Wyatt Russell. If the third act fixes its miscues, then The Woman in the Window could be a breakout hit in 2020.
