The character list for Titansseason 4 is expanding with casting confirmed for Brother Blood, Mother Mayhem, and Jinx. These characters all at least begin their narratives as villains, with Brother Blood and Mother Mayhem working as a part of the Church of Blood. While the Church of Blood is expected to be the main antagonist for Titans season 4, Jinx is set for a recurring role throughout the season, hinting at a potential narrative direction for the show.

Titans has now fully established the group with not only a full cadre of heroes but plenty of allies who might come and go throughout the coming seasons. However, the series has struggled to find villains that are able to be an appropriate fit for a team with such disparate power levels. While season 1’s Trigon’s (Seamus Deaver) powers were godlike, season 2’s Deathstroke/Slade Wilson was only a skilled metahuman, and season 3’s Scarecrow and Red Hood team up relied on behind the scenes scheming. Furthermore, the villains have repeatedly required team members like Starfire and Raven to be nerfed or absent to avoid them easily defeating the villains.

The Church of Blood and Jinx could all help to balance this issue out by presenting a range of powers that will match up differently to the members of the Titans. Season 3 saw some members come into their powers more fully while also recruiting the new member Tim Drake as Robin, so there is plenty of scope for new and more impressive villains. Here’s everything to know about the Church of Blood, Brother Blood (Joseph Morgan), Mother Mayhem (Franka Potente), and Jinx (Lisa Ambalavanar) and what they might mean for Titans season 4.

Who Are The Church Of Blood: Brother Blood & Mother Mayhem Comics History Explained

The Church of Blood first appeared in DC comics in July 1982, the mind-child of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. Founded in the 13th century in the European nation of Zandia, the original Brother Blood murdered another priest to obtain what was believed to have been Christ’s prayer shawl. In the DC comics, the shawl gave Sebastian Blood superpowers and extended his natural life, but with his dying breath, the priest cursed him to be murdered by his own son before his 100th birthday. This came to pass, with his son, also named Sebastian, taking up the shawl and becoming the new Brother Blood. The curse transferred and the cycle repeated for hundreds of years when Sebastian Blood VIII encountered the Titans in the 20th century.

Mother Mayhem was the title given to the woman in the Church of Blood who would bear the next Brother Blood, marrying the current Brother Blood and raising his son. Sebastian Blood VIII’s powers included hypnosis and sorcery, but he was eventually murdered by Sebastian Blood IX whose powers came in the form of enhanced strength and a vampiric ability to draw power from blood itself, gaining the abilities of those whose blood he has taken. Like his predecessor, he was accompanied by Mother Mayhem who served as his advisor; however, the title was merely one given to whoever was willing to tell him what he wanted to hear.

What The Church Of Blood Mean For Titans Season 4

As Brother Blood and Mother Mayhem are titles that are passed down from villain to villain, it is hard to know which versions of the characters Joseph Morgan and Franka Potente will be portraying in Titans season 4. In the past, Titans has tended to take some liberties with how they adapt characters, allowing them to alter the character to fit the story that they want to tell. It is likely that Titans season 4 will see some amalgamation of these characters created, with certain story beats replicated. With the arrival of Brother Blood IX, it was revealed that the Church of Blood (also known as the Cult of Blood) was based around the worship of Trigon. This could mean that the Church of Blood’s arrival in Titans will result in Trigon’s return after his anti-climactic disappearance at the start of Titans season 2, or at the very least, Raven is likely to be a key target of the Church of Blood. Another, potentially troubling storyline, saw Sebastian Blood IX create his own group of Titans by bringing Hawk, Dove, Phantasm, Kole, and Aquagirl back from the dead. While not all of these characters have appeared in Titans, an adaptation of this storyline leaves room for the possibility of bringing Hank/Hawk (Alan Ritchson) back for a cameo appearance, alongside Aqualad (Drew Van Acker) in place of Aquagirl.

Which Version Of Jinx Will Appear In Titans Season 4?

While Lisa Ambalavanar is confirmed to be playing Jinx for a recurring role in Titans season 4, which version of Jinx the series will draw on is not clear. In the original DC comics, Jinx is a powerful sorcerer with power over elements and energy manipulation that gives her powers that are analogous to the Titans portrayals of Starfire and Blackfire. However, the Teen Titans cartoon popularized a distinctly different version of the character who, while both were members of the Fearsome Five, has a different take on the character’s powers. The Jinx that appears in Teen Titans has some energy manipulation powers but primarily relies on her ability to alter probability, hexing things so that they function incorrectly or in improbable ways. Titans has historically drawn on elements of both the comics and the cartoons and given the powers already at work in the series and the relatively young actress cast as Jinx, it seems probable that the series will lean into the Teen Titans version and include her probability manipulation powers.

What Jinx Means For Titans Season 4: The Fearsome Five & H.I.V.E.

In Teen Titans, Jinx is often matched up against Raven, a character who in Titans is often missing a suitable opponent. Her appearance in Titans season 4 should help to even the playing field and provide more balanced combat between the Titans and their villains. As Jinx is only appearing in a recurring role, it is unclear whether she will be a villain, a hero, or merely something in between.

Jinx’s inclusion could see Titans season 4 bring back some past characters and organizations as part of exploring her story. Jinx was originally trained by H.I.V.E., an organization that was responsible for giving Slade Wilson/Deathstroke his powers in Titans but has not been mentioned since. This connection to Deathstroke might provide an opportunity to bring back Rose and Jericho Wilson, who disappeared after Titans season 2 and have not been mentioned since. Similarly, Jinx could help to introduce a version of the Fearsome Five. In the comics, the team includes several different villains over the years (including Jinx’s normal sidekicks Mammoth and Gizmo), two of whom have appeared in Titans already. While Doctor Light was killed in season 2, the same season also introduced the character of Shimmer who was an original member of the Fearsome Five and her brief appearance was never really explained. Titans could replace the missing Doctor Light with Lady Vic, helping to create an all-female Fearsome Five, and pay off the Titans season 3’s introduction of Lady Vic who only appeared in a single episode of Titans season 3. Ultimately, Jinx will allow Titans season 4 to bring back several important villains and organizations and provide a new threat to the Titans unless she ends up becoming their ally.
