Where Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston Is In GTA Online

John Marston may be the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption, but he also appears in Grand Theft Auto Online. For anyone unfamiliar with GTA Online, that may seem a little strange. So, what’s a cowboy from the 1800s doing in modern day Los Santos? It’s actually not too complicated.

First introduced in Red Dead Redemption in 2010, John Marston also appears in Red Dead Redemption 2, which serves as a prequel to the original. He’s a popular character from the Red Dead series, so it makes sense Rockstar Games would want to incorporate him into Grand Theft Auto somehow. It may not be the RDR2 and GTA Online crossover event that some fans want, but it’s still a nice easter egg for fans.

Although the title originally released in 2013, GTA Online still gets regular updates. The online world of Grand Theft Auto 5 offers players a chance to create their own character and play with other people. It also keeps players coming back to a game that’s been around for the better part of a decade. There’s even going to be exclusive new content when Grand Theft Auto 5 moves to next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. Fans of the Red Dead series who haven’t tried out the game yet should be pleasantly surprised to find John Marston in GTA Online as well, but unfortunately they won’t be able to interact with him.

Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston Can Be Your Dad In GTA Online

Red Dead Redemption’s John Marston makes his appearance early on, specifically during the character creation portion of GTA Online. When players create their own character, they choose both their parents and the game makes a combination of those two people for the player to embody. One of the people players can choose as their father is Red Dead Redemption’s protagonist, John Marston. Depending on the female character players choose to be their mother, and how much they toggle options, this means any number of John Marston lookalikes can be spotted running around the game.

Technically, this also means there are countless numbers of John Marston’s progeny in the world of Grand Theft Auto now. It’s a weird, but completely fun, way to incorporate the character into GTA Online. Fans have wanted crossovers with RDR2 and GTA Online for a while, and John Marston’s cameo is proof that at one point Rockstar Games had those same ideas in mind.

For anyone who wants to play as John Marston in GTA Online, creating a character that looks just like him is pretty close to the real thing. It’s an entertaining way to combine the worlds of Grand Theft Auto with Red Dead Redemption. Fans of Rockstar Games’ titles should absolutely love it, even if the game’s timelines (GTAO in 2013, RDR2 in 1899-1906) don’t really add up.
