There are several legendary creatures in Red Dead Redemption 2 for Arthur Morgan and John Marston to hunt down and catch, but the hardest one to tick off of the list may be the legendary bullhead catfish, and probably not for the reasons many would expect. The vast open world of RDR2 is populated in good portions by characters and creatures intent on causing harm to Arthur and John. From rival gang members and law enforcement to wild cougars, bears, and alligators, players will need to be on their toes when exploring the environment, even while on missions with fellow members of the Van der Linde gang, but the legendary bullhead catfish in RDR2 is one of the most challenging.

Fishing is an important activity in Red Dead Redemption 2, as it serves multiple functions. It’s used as a bonding activity between multiple members of the Van der Linde gang, with Arthur taking John and Abigail’s son Jack fishing in the opening act, and Arthur accompanying Dutch and Hosea in Lemoyne while they reminisce about the gang’s glory days. Fishing is also an easy way to supply food to Pearson, the camp cook, as it’s less time-consuming than hunting for game and larger fish can provide multiple meals. As Arthur or John, players can also take part in a Stranger Mission, called A Fisher of Fish, where they meet a supposed legendary fisherman and hunt down various legendary fish-types dotted across Red Dead Redemption 2‘s map. One of these is the legendary bullhead catfish in RDR2, which can only be found in a specific area of the map.

Players wanting to complete the compendium will have a lot of work on their hands, as some of the creatures in the game are exceedingly rare, with many having only a couple of spawning locations across the vast map. The legendary animals and fish, however, do have fixed spawning points which in theory should make them easier to catch, although in the legendary bullhead catfish’s case, this itself is the problem, as players wanting to catch this elusive creature will have to take part in a very different kind of prison break to what would be expected. The legendary bullhead catfish in RDR2 makes his home in the waters around the game’s dreaded Sisika Penitentiary, requiring the player to enter the restricted waters surrounding the prison. This is the only activity available in the prison, as hopes that Red Dead Online could use Sisika Penitentiary have largely dwindled in the months since Rockstar scaled-down updates for the game.

RDR2’s Legendary Bullhead Catfish Lives In Isika Penitentiary

While the legendary bullhead catfish in RDR2 may not be as big or as powerful as some of the other legendary fish required by Arthur, the fish’s choice of home will give the player more problems than any creature in the compendium. A restricted area in Red Dead Redemption 2 means that when the player enters the vicinity, they will be hit with a wanted: dead or alive status, and a stream of endless guards will open fire, effectively locking the player out of the area. Unlike some of the other areas, Sisika Penitentiary doesn’t open after beating Red Dead Redemption 2.

A prison break is a popular facet of Westerns and Red Dead Redemption 2 even features a prison break of its own through the course of the story, but the return trip required by avid anglers will be a new, and difficult, spin on the troupe. Catching the legendary bullhead catfish in RDR2 is also made tougher by the fact that the player will require a boat to make the trip across the river to the prison, which can also take up time depending on how quickly one can be located. The legendary bullhead catfish may not be the largest, but it’s still the toughest catch.
