Witcher: Henry Cavill Confirms Connection Between Geralt’s Sword & Renfri

Henry Cavill, the star of The Witcher series, has confirmed that there is a connection between his character Geralt’s sword and Renfri. Airing on Netflix, The Witcher is a fantasy series that follows Geralt of Rivera, a witcher who uses his skills as a swordsman and his magical abilities to hunt monsters. His life soon becomes complicated as he finds that his destiny has become intertwined with a young princess and a powerful sorceress. The series has become a huge hit and despite mixed reviews, has become one of Netflix’s most popular shows.

In the show, Renfri is a cursed former princess who is hunted by a wizard named Stregobor, as he believes that she is inherently evil due to the circumstances of her birth. When Renfri tries to kill Stregobor in retaliation, Geralt and Renfri fight, and Geralt fatally wounds her. As time goes on, Geralt actively tries to do good and avoid conflict when he can, but knows that evil often has a way of finding him.

Netflix has been releasing several videos to promote The Witcher as of late. In a video posted on Twitter by NXOnNetflix, an account dedicated to “geek” content on Netflix, Henry Cavill explains why Geralt’s sword is so unique. One of the reasons is that his sword features a broach owned by Renfri. According to Cavill, Geralt added Renfri’s broach to the hilt of his sword as a reminder that “he shouldn’t get involved in the affairs of men, because they always lead to his own personal pain.” Check out the video with Cavill below:

Cavill went further into detail about the use of Geralt’s swords within the series. Geralt’s primary sword is made from meteorite and is used to kill both monsters and men. Geralt’s silver sword is used exclusively to kill monsters, and he typically keeps it on his horse, Roach. Cavill also discussed the use of the sword from a behind-the-scenes perspective, explaining its utilization within The Witcher‘s fight scenes. Depending on how the scene is choreographed, rubber swords are sometimes used to maximize safety when shooting. Other times, swords that only include the hilt are used so CGI and other special effects can be properly added to a scene.

The Witcher‘s popularity has transcended the show itself. The Witcher was originally a book series composed of novels and short stories by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. Because of the show’s success, the books have received half a million new prints due to peaked fan interest. The Witcher was also adapted into a successful video game franchise, with the third entry, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt receiving significant praise. Wild Hunt has surged in popularity over four years after its initial release, as fans wished to return to The Continent after finishing season one of the series. Hopefully, the books and video games can hold over fans of the show for now, as season two of The Witcher won’t be released until some time in 2021.
